If a veil doesn't align with that, then you certainly do not need one. "There are no rules when it comes to your wedding attire," says Deeb. "A lot of people think wearing a veil is required out of tradition, but maybe tradition just isn't your thing.

Many brides choose to wear a wedding veil for at least a portion of the day. That could be from the first look through the ceremony or from the ceremony into the reception. It is entirely up to you! After all, if you love your veil, you should wear it as long as you want.

Others, however, choose to wear one as it's a time-honored tradition that has been followed for decades within their families, cultures, or religions. Some brides may even see veils as an extra cost or nuisance and prefer to skip them altogether.

Whether it is incorporating a bit of color so that you don't look so traditionally bridal, choosing a short veil or headpiece that makes you feel beautifully feminine and chic, or going with a nontraditional cape for a bit of shoulder and arm coverage, the options are endless for older brides.

Usually, the father of the bride, or the person who escorts the bride, lifts the bridal veil just after the bride arrives beside the groom. Alternatively, the groom may lift the veil at the moment before the marriage kiss is exchanged.

In fact, just 14 per cent are opting for the long-held tradition of wearing the veil over the face when walking down the aisle, Kate and Meghan style. Notably, 83 per cent of those covering the face are religious weddings.

It is good to remember that there are no hard rules about veils. It's your wedding and you get to do whatever feels right to you. Accordingly, you can lift your veil at different times during your wedding day.

By wearing the veil, the bride acknowledges her “rejection” of the world and subjects her heart to the Lord who will protect her from evil. Veils are also worn in arranged marriages for the same purpose of modesty and to prevent the groom from getting cold feet.
