Homemade Peppermint Patties Recipe (2024)

Homemade Peppermint Patties are better than any other peppermint patty I have ever tasted. It's the perfect amount of chocolate and mint. You will love these.

Homemade Peppermint Patties Recipe (1)

Ever since I was little, I have loved peppermint patties. This past Christmas, my cute neighbor Shelley brought over her HOMEMADE version and I seriously died.

They were 1,000 times better than store-bought ones, so I hid them in the pantry and didn’t share any of them with my family – not exactly my proudest moment, but hey- you gotta do what you gotta do.

Those patties were totally worth it. I googled the recipe after Christmas and stumbled on this one. It was easier than thought and the end result was delicious.

They may not look as pretty, but they taste phenomenal.

what is the best way to dip candies?

Dipping candies can be difficult, but here are a few tips, that will make it a breeze.

Tip 1: Make sure your candy centers are completely frozen. You will want to be sure they aren’t gooey, because the chocolate you are dipping them in is going to be hot, and will melt the candy centers.

Tip 2: We recommend freezing the candy centers on a wax paper lined, cookie sheet.

Tip 3: Once frozen, heat up the chocolate, and stir continually, to ensure that it doesn’t dry up.

Tip 4: Get a plastic fork, and remove the two middle prongs of the fork, so it is only the two outside prongs.

Place the frozen patty in the middle, so the prongs are holding it up. Dip in the chocolate. Flip, and remove from the chocolate. Let the excess chocolate drip off.

Tip 5: Place on aluminum foil or wax paper. Let cool completely. We recommend refrigerating or freezing them. They are delicious frozen.

what is the best way to store these peppermint patties?

These peppermint patties save well. If you are making them a week in advance, we recommend keeping them in an airtight container, and placing them in the fridge.

However, if you are making them for longer than a week in advance, I would place them in an airtight container, and put them in the freezer.

Remove them from the freezer 24 hours before serving them, unless you are wanting to serve them frozen, which is also delicious.

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup sweetened condensed milk
  • teaspoons peppermint extract
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 cups semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 teaspoons shortening

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine sweetened condensed milk and peppermint extract.

  • Beat in the powdered sugar just a little at a time, until a stiff dough starts to form and the dough isn't sticky.

  • Form into 1 inch balls, then place on waxed paper and flatten with fingers to form patties. Let patties dry at room temperature for about two hours (I turned flipped mine over after about 1 hours to make sure they were evenly set on both sides).

  • In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt chocolate with shortening, stirring often (you could also melt the chocolate in the microwave- just do whatever you are comfortable with!).

  • Remove chocolate from heat.

  • Dip patties, one at a time, into chocolate by laying them on the tines of a fork and lowering the fork into the liquid.

  • Let cool on waxed paper until set. Place in the fridge so let them set-up even faster (I actually prefer to eat them straight out of the fridge).

Notes

  • These peppermint patties save well. If you are making them a week in advance, we recommend keeping them in an airtight container, and placing them in the fridge.

Ha Ha Ha! Camille I have done the same thing with other goodies! These look phenomenal!

  2. Carrie @ Kenarry: Ideas for the Home says:

I don't think these would last long at our house! They look delicious.

  3. Ann-Marie says:

    Would these freeze ok?

  4. Cyd says:

We think they should freeze fine, but we eat them too fast...they never make it to the freezer.

  5. Becky says:

I made these today, they didn't set up for several hours then when I dipped them into the. Go late, they fell apart. What did I do wrong? The flavor is fabulous, I wish they would turn out right!

  6. Cyd says:

Hi Becky, we are not sure what could have gone wrong. We have never had a problem with them falling apart. Did the minty part seem way too dry? Maybe you need to cut back a little on the powdered sugar if too dry. Sorry it didn't work for you.

  7. Michele says:

when I make homemade peppermint patties, I freeze them first then dip them in chocolate. It helps them to not break apart when dipping.

  8. Terah says:

Do you think I could use peppermint oil instead of extract? A lot less of course!

  9. Cyd says:

We have never made this recipe with peppermint oil, but the extract is just for flavoring. So if you can switch those out it should work just fine!

  10. Kim says:

I let mine set overnight. They weren't dry after 2 hours and fell apart when dipped. Waiting overnight made dipping so much easier! Making another batch this week. Switching out peppermint for orange in half the batch (kids request!) Hopefully they are tasty! Thank you for a delicious and easy recipe.

  11. Jeanne says:

These are SO GOOD and easy to make. I let them dry over night (flipping them half way) and had no problems dipping. They were devoured by my daughters and friends. Everyone rated them better than store bought. I will definitely be making them again.

  12. Melody says:

I was wondering about switching out the shortening for coconut oil. Do you think it would still work?

  13. Cyd says:

Hi Melody, we have not tried swapping out shortening for coconut oil in this recipe. Coconut oil is used as a substitute for shortening in baking. The taste may be altered a little.

  14. Sarah says:

Have you ever tried with dark chocolate for dipping, have some leftover and wondered if it might work?

  15. Cyd says:

Dark chocolate should work just fine.

  16. Catherine says:

Just made these today and I'm sorry to say they are inedible. The smell and the flavor of the sweetened condensed milk is absolutely overwhelming. The first bite actually made me nauseous. These taste nothing like the cool peppermint flavor I was expecting and I am so disappointed. :(((

  17. Audrey says:

I like to eat York peppermint patties straight from the freezer! But like you said, I'm not certain they'd last long frozen. ;)

  18. Cyd says:

They are good frozen. I'm sure they will freeze in an airtight container.

  19. LAKohl says:

They certainly do not dry out in 2 hours - even after 24 hours of waiting, they still fell apart when dipping. Save yourself time, money, mess and a lot of frustration - go buy a package of York peppermint patties and spend your time making a candy that will actually turn out nicely after all the time you spend making it.I'm not trying to be rude - just wish someone would have posted a comment like this and I would have read it before I wasted my time.Perhaps the brand of sweetened condensed milk makes a difference? I have no idea - I'm not going to experiment as I have no intention of ever trying these again.

  20. liz says:

Any ideas on a substitute for condensed milk?

  21. Jeanna says:

I made these and if you make the round too thin they will desolve in the chocolate

  22. Sara says:

These did not work for me either. Waste of ingredients. Very disappointed!

  23. Kim says:

Huge hit, huge! Easy to make, but need to dry overnight. Easy to dip. My husband, brother n law and good friend loved them!! Next time double or triple this recipe!!!

  24. Marlene says:

I made these tonight and can’t wait to try them - they’re drying on the counter right now and I don’t know if I can wait much longer! The whole process was easy but I used the whole can of sweetened condensed milk so I wouldn’t have leftover. Then I added extra powdered sugar and extra extract. I think next time I will add even more extract - I like them a little more pepperminty (is that even a word?). They do look tasty...mmm.....

  25. Marlene says:

Update: I put these in the fridge to harden and tried one today. OMG....they are incredible! They taste exactly like the York patties, so I will never buy them again. So easy to make, no preservatives and other chemicals, and cheaper than buying them all the time. I can’t thank you enough for giving up the very easy and awesome recipe!!

  26. Cyd says:

Hi Marlene. Your sweet comment made our whole day! We are glad that you like the homemade peppermint patties. Thanks for stopping by our website. Have a great week.
