McDonald's Breakfast Sauce Recipe (2024)

McDonald’s has a habit of introducing foods that become extremely popular, only to take them away during one of their frequent menu overhauls.

And unfortunately, their beloved deliciously creamy and tangy breakfast sauce fell to one such fate.

This would frequently be served with their breakfast bagels and was especially popular when served in their folded egg and bacon bagel (which was also discontinued).

However, many people enjoyed the McDonald’s bagel sauce so much that they managed to recreate it.

Thanks to them, today we can share with you this McDonald’s breakfast sauce copycat recipe!

How to make McDonald’s Breakfast Sauce

This is a wonderfully tangy and creamy sauce that uses mayo, mustard, and lemon to create one of the best sandwiches, burgers, and bagel spreads around.

It’s also incredibly easy to make, only requiring one teaspoon of each ingredient.

The whole thing can be prepared in 3 minutes just using a small bowl and a whisk, so you are free to get a little creative with it.

Use it on anything and everything!

Ingredients:

(5 servings)

  • 1 tbsp of mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp of yellow mustard
  • 1 tsp of lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp of steak sauce
  • 1 tbsp of dried dill weed
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • 1 tsp of black pepper

Instructions:

While it might seem like a fairly simple recipe, there is a reason why we use equal quantities of each ingredient.

What we’re trying to do is bring in the creaminess with the mayo, the tart, and tangy flavor qualities with the mustard, and that nice bit of citrus zing with the lemon.

You can add the salt and pepper to taste depending on your preferences, I recommend going a little heavier with the pepper to add that extra bit of bite to the sauce!

Step 1:

Using a small bowl, combine the mustard, lemon juice, steak sauce, and dill.

Step 2:

Add a little salt and pepper to taste and stir the whole thing together.

Step 3:

Cover the bowl and chill for a while to let it cool and get that nice and thick consistency before serving.

And you’re done! It’s really that simple!

McDonald’s Bagel Sauce Ingredients substitutions

As this is designed to be served alongside breakfast menu items, it’s not supposed to be too strong and abrasive in flavor.

This gives us a tremendous amount of opportunity to dial in the recipe to our preferences by substituting or adding additional ingredients.

It’s also very easy to make into a vegan-friendly sauce too.

1. Tabasco

McDonald's Breakfast Sauce Recipe (2)

The easiest way to turn this creamy sauce into something with a bit more fight to it is tabasco sauce.

Just 4-5 drops of tabasco sauce in a 5-serving recipe will be enough to give this a very respectable amount of heat.

If you don’t like the flavor of tabasco you can use cayenne pepper in its stead as it tends to add less flavor and mainly serves to add just ‘pure heat’.

2. Sour Cream

A great alternative if you don’t have mayonnaise available (or just don’t like the taste).

It’s very similar in consistency and will add that extra zip of flavor that mayo can’t quite satisfy.

It’s also a slightly healthier option than mayonnaise, containing a little bit of vitamin A and B12.

You can use it in a simple 1:1 substitution ratio.

3. Lime juice

McDonald's Breakfast Sauce Recipe (3)

By far the best substitute for lemon juice.

It contains remarkably similar levels of acidity and taste so you can use it as a nice and simple 1:1 replacement.

Now while lime does definitely have its own unique flavor when compared to lemon, it will still add that tartness and citrusy tang to the sauce.

Definitely use this over other common substitutes such as vinegar which is less acidic and doesn’t store as well.

4. Avocado

If you’re looking to lighten up your breakfast and add some nutritious healthy fats to your sauce, simply mash up ¼ to ⅓ of avocado and stir it into your breakfast sauce.

We all know how good avocado is on toast so this makes an excellent pairing with any kind of breakfast sandwich, bagel, or muffin.

What to serve with McDonald’sBreakfast Sauce

While this sauce was originally designed to be served with many of the items on their breakfast menu.

There’s is absolutely nothing stopping you from using it for lunch and dinner either!

It’s so easy to make you can just make and use it on anything you want.

But here are our top suggestions for fantastic pairings for this sauce, whether you want to spread it on something or use it as a dipping sauce.

Egg Muffin

McDonald's Breakfast Sauce Recipe (4)

This was a pretty obvious choice – the quintessential, quick, and easy morning meal that’ll always leave you satisfied and ready to take on your day.

Spread some of the breakfast sauce on both sides of a freshly toasted English muffin and pair it with some bacon, cheese, and egg to give your morning sandwich that extra kick.

Sausage burrito

While not as popular as the egg muffin, McDonald’s sausage burrito, which consists of pork, melted cheese, green chile, and onion paired with some fluffy scrambled eggs benefits hugely from a little bit of breakfast sauce.

If you are making the burrito yourself you can spread it inside the wrap by using the back of a spoon.

Or if you want a more decadent approach use it as a dipping sauce and dunk the burrito in before taking a bite.

Hash Browns

These make a great extra pairing for any of the other breakfast items.

These crispy fried chunks of shredded potato taste delicious when dipped in a bit of our tangy breakfast sauce.

What’s even nicer is you can buy these frozen in bulk from the supermarket, making it easy to enjoy this winning combination with just 10 minutes of cooking.

McDonald’s ‘big breakfast’

A grilled sausage paired with scrambled egg, hashbrowns, and two deliciously warm, buttery biscuits makes for the perfect breakfast.

Every single item in this package will pair well with our breakfast sauce allowing you to get maximum value from it.

These are also super quick and easy to prepare at home, you can treat it as a traditional fry up and cook everything in the same pan at the same time, easy!

How to store McDonald’s Breakfast Sauce

To keep the consistency nice and thick, and ingredients such as mayo as fresh as possible, when not in use it’s best to keep this sauce refrigerated to ensure maximum flavor and shelf life.

Luckily, this is easy to do!

Store in the fridge

Transfer the sauce to an airtight container or simply cover it with plastic wrap and refrigerate, once stored it will keep for up to two months.

Providing it’s well sealed.

Store in the freezer

Freezing is a great option if you want to make the sauce in bulk and use it for later.

Transfer the sauce into freezer bags and press out as much air as possible and freeze.

Because of the mayo that’s present, it will only last for about 3 months once frozen.

Also please note that once it has been defrosted, you must not re-freeze it.
