Do need relief from your chapped lips? Homemade lip balm is a great chapped lip remedy. Not only does homemade lip balm soothe and moisturize lips, it can also protect lips from further chapping. However, if you’re vegan, you may have found that most homemade lip balm recipes call for beeswax. Beeswax is a popular wax as it’s not only common, it’s also affordable. In addition, beeswax also serves to help protect lips from the elements. However, you don’t have to use beeswax to make lip balm.

My lemongrass ginger lip balm is naturally scented with essential oils. It can also be tinted with bronze mica to create a tinted lip balm in the shade of your choice and to add shimmer. I’ve created a natural lip balm recipe without beeswax for vegan lip care. So you can give your lips some love without sacrificing your desire to stick to plant based beauty products.

Can you make lip balm without beeswax?

Can you make a homemade lip balm recipe without beeswax? Absolutely! Making lip balm without beeswax is easy. There are a number of vegan, plant based waxes that you can use in place of beeswax in your natural lip balm recipes. I often use candelilla wax or carnauba wax as vegan wax alternatives. However, soy wax is another plant based option.

Can you swap a vegan wax with beeswax in a lip balm recipe?

If you already have a lip balm recipe you want to make, but it calls for beeswax, you may want to know if you can swap a vegan wax for the beeswax in the recipe. Unfortunately, you can’t substitute the same amount of a vegan wax with beeswax and get the same results. This is because beeswax has a different melting point than other waxes. Both carnauba wax and candelilla wax have higher melting points than beeswax. Therefore, you would need to use less of these waxes in your lip balm recipes when making substitutions for beeswax.

To determine how much vegan wax you need to substitute with beeswax, you need to do a little math. First determine the percentage of difference in the melting point from one wax to the other. If the wax you have chosen to use in place of the beeswax has a higher melting point than the beeswax, then you would decrease the amount of wax you are substituting by that percentage. If the wax has a lower melting point than the beeswax, then you need to increase the amount of wax in the lip balm recipe by that percentage. (A percentage calculator comes in really handy for this task.)

Fortunately, you don’t need to solve any math equations to make my vegan lemongrass ginger lip balm recipe! So if you’re math skills aren’t quite what they used to be, no worries. My essential oil lip balm recipe is naturally formulated without beeswax. All you need to do is weigh out the ingredients, mix them together, then pour them into lip balm tubes or pots.

How to Make Homemade Lip Balm without Beeswax

Once you have all the ingredients and tools you need to make this homemade lip balm recipe with essential oils, you’re ready to get started. Here’s how to make a natural lip balm recipe without beeswax.

  1. Begin by weighing out the carnauba wax into a small glass Pyrex measuring cup. Heat at 50% power in the microwave or in a double boiler. (You can place the measuring cup in a pot of water on top of a canning ring in a pinch.) Heat until the wax melts about 2/3 of the way through.
  2. Next measure out the cocoa butter and add to the partially melted wax. Continue melting.
  3. Once these ingredients have melted completely, weigh out and add the coconut oil and shea butter and continue heating until melted.
  4. Remove the melted ingredients from heat source. Then weigh out the jojoba, castor and sweet almond oils. Stir in the previously melted ingredients.
  5. Using a new plastic transfer pipette for each essential oil, add the ginger and lemongrass essential oils. Stir to combine.
  6. Now measure out the bronze mica powder and mix and whisk with a fork until fully incorporated. (For bold rather than sheer color increase the amount until you reach desired color. It will look darker in the tube than on your lips!) If the mixture has started to cool reheat slightly.
  7. Transfer half the melted lip balm into a small beaker and then pour into lip balm tubes. Repeat with the second half of the lip balm. (I use the small beakers as they are so much easier to control and the transfer pipettes will melt if your lip balm base is too hot or if it’s too cool the lip balm will harden in the tubes very quickly.)
  8. Once the lip balms have cooled completely and hardened, place the caps on the lip balm. Then label as desired.

Can I Substitute a Natural Colorant for the Mica to Make Natural Lip Balm?

If you prefer a completely natural lip balm recipe, you can omit the bronze mica entirely or substitute the mica powder with a natural colorant of your choice.

Beet root powder is a nice natural colorant for homemade lip balm recipes. Simply infuse the beetroot powder in the carrier oils called for in the recipe, then strain before using.

Can I Use Beeswax to Make This Tinted Lip Balm Recipe?

What if I don’t have carnauba wax? If you don’t have carnauba wax you can still make this lip balm recipe with essential oils. Simply use .65 oz. of beeswax in place of the carnauba wax.

Alternately, you can also make this natural lip balm with both beeswax and carnauba wax. In this instance, you would use .3 oz. each of both carnauba wax and beeswax.
